Replacing God’s Position With Human Authority Is Sin
1 Samuel 12:17-18 “Isn’t it wheat harvest now? I will call upon the LORD to send thunder & rain & then you will realize what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the LORD when you asked for a king.” Then Samuel called upon the LORD & that same day the LORD sent thunder & rain. So all the people stood in awe of the LORD & of Samuel.
The Founding Fathers Saw Independence As The Restoration Of God’s Sovereignty
We have this day restored the Sovereign to Whom Alone men ought to be obedient. He reigns in Heaven & beholds His subjects assuming that freedom of thought & dignity of self-direction which He bestowed on them. From the rising to the setting sun, may His kingdom come!

Lack Of Wholehearted Devotion Invites Evil
1 Samuel 16:14-17 The Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul & an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him. Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the harp. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes upon you & you will feel better.” So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well & bring him to me.”
God Is Sovereign Over Demonic Activity
1 Kings 22:19-23 Micaiah said, “Hear the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on His throne with all the host of heaven standing around Him on His right & on His left. The LORD said, ‘Who will entice Ahab into attacking Ramoth Gilead & going to his death there?’ “One suggested this & another that. Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD & said, ‘I will entice him.’ “ ‘By what means?’ the LORD asked. “ ‘I will go out & be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,’ he said. ” ‘You will succeed in enticing him,’ said the LORD. ‘Go & do it.’ ” So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of all these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you!
Satan Is Behind All Disobedience To God
Acts 5:1-5 Ananias & his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest & put it at the apostles’ feet. Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit & have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? After it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.” When Ananias heard this, he fell down & died. Great fear seized all who heard what had happened.
God’s Love For His People Is Unassailable
Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Seek Out Relationship With Someone Who Is With The Lord
1 Samuel 16:18-20 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play the harp. He is a brave man & a warrior. He speaks well & is a fine-looking man. The LORD is with him.” Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse & said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine & a young goat & sent them with his son David to Saul.
A Friend Who Is With The Lord Is Invaluable
Proverbs 22:11 He who loves a pure heart & whose speech is gracious will have the king for his friend.
Proverbs 27:9 Ointment & perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man’s friend by hearty counsel.
1 Corinthians15:33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
Our Praise Can Pacify A Troubled Heart
1 Samuel 16:21-23 David came to Saul & entered his service. Saul liked him very much & David became one of his armor-bearers. Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.” Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp & play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better & the evil spirit would leave him.
