The Command With Promise
HONOR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER
It Is The 1st Command Of The 2nd Tablet
Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
The Lord Jesus Confirmed It
Mark 10:17-19 A man ran up to Jesus and fell on his knees before Him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered …You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’
The Lord Loves Those Who Obey It
Mark 10:20-21 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.” …Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
The Lord Kept It Even As He Died For Us!
John 19:25-27 Near the cross of Jesus stood His mother, His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw His mother there and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Dear woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
The Apostles Confirm It As Church Doctrine
Ephesians 6:2-3 Honor your father and mother. This is the first commandment with a promise, If you honor your father and mother, things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.
God Himself Expects Honor
Malachi 1:6 A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If I am a Father, where is the honor due Me? If I am a Master, where is the respect due Me? says the LORD Almighty!
Honor Means Material Support
Matthew 15:3-7 Jesus replied, “Why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God has said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever help you might have received from me is a gift I devoted to God,’ he is not to ‘honor his father’ with it. Thus you nullify the Word of God for the sake of your tradition. You hypocrites!
Faith Is Proven In Its Application
1 Timothy 5:4 …if a widow has children or grandchildren, they should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.
Failure In This Area Reveals Unbelief
1 Timothy 5:8 If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
The End Times Are Characterized By Parental Disrespect
2 Timothy 3:1-4 …in the last days difficult times will come. people will be lovers of selves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God…
The Greatest Honor You Can Bestow Upon Your Family Is To Follow The Lord!
Matthew 12:47-50 Someone told Him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to You.” He replied to him, “Who is My mother, and who are My brothers?” Pointing to His disciples, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers. For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”
