How to Handle Trials

  1. As Christians, we must expect
These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.  [John 16:33]    (See 2 Corinthians 1:8-9; 11:23-33)
  1. We must accept And we can because …
  • God is sovereign.
“For I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.”   [Jeremiah 29:11]

(See also Job 1:21; 2:10; and Matthew 26:37-38)

(See also Deuteronomy 10:14,15; and John 3:16)

  • God is with us.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble.  [Psalm 46:1]  (See also Psalm 37:5, and Hebrews 2:18)
  1. We must embrace trials as a learning opportunity.
  • God uses trials for our own good.
And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. [Romans 8:28]
  • We can do this by…
  • Maintaining an attitude of gratitude (Psalms 34:8,  2 Corinthians 12:8-10)
  • Continuing in worship and prayer (Job 1:20, James 5:13)
  • Leaning on God for strength (Psalms 73:26, 28)
  • Asking others for help (John 19:28, Galatians 6:2)
  1. We must use trials to comfort others.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.                       [2 Corinthians 1:3-4]  (See also 1 Thessalonians 5:11, 14; Galatians 6:2; 1 Corinthians 12:26)
