A Philosophy To Live By
Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount

Justice & Vengeance
Matthew 5:38-48

God Promised a New Covenant
Jeremiah 31:31-34  “The time is coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke My covenant, though I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord.

The New Covenant Governs Us Internally
Jeremiah 31:31-34  “This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put My law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be My people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the Lord. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

Justice Is Necessary For Civil Order
Matthew 5:38  Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth…

Civil Order is Governments Responsibility
Romans 13:1-5  Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God’s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God’s servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.

Retaliation Interferes With Reconciliation
Matthew 5:39  But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

The Old Position Friends & Enemies
Matthew 5:43  You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

The New Position; Friends Or Enemies
Matthew 5:44-45  But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you…

Godlike Behavior is Expected in the New Covenant
Matthew 5:44-45  …that you may be children of your Father in heaven, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

Christ-like Reactions are Perfect!
Matthew 5:46-48  If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
