Communion Devotional—Teachings From The Cross:
Father…Forgive Them

Our Sin Revealed Itself When He Was Sentenced
Luke 23:26-31  …they led him away, seizing Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.  Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.  For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’  Then “‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!”‘  For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

His Death On The Cross Was Pre-Ordained
Revelation 13:8  …all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world.

Acts 2:23-24  This man was handed over to you by God’s set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

Forgiveness Is Only Possible Because He Died
Luke 23:32-34  Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals–one on his right, the other on his left.  Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Our Sin Nature Scorns God’s Strategy
Luke 23:34-37  …they divided up his clothes by casting lots. The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.” The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

Confession of Our Condition Allows Him To Save Us
Luke 23:38-43  There was a written notice above him, which read: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”  Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Christ’s Love Is Always Concerned for Others
John 19:26-27  When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, “Woman, behold thy son!”  Then saith he to the disciple, “Behold thy mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

He Became Sin & Sin Separates From God
Isaiah 59:2  …your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.

Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

2nd Corinthians 5:21  God made Him Who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Galatians 3:13  Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”

He Thirsted To Tell Us…
John 19:28-29 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.”  A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips.

That The Work of Forgiving Us Was Complete
John 19:30  When He had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” (Father into Your hands do I commit My spirit…) With that, He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

Colossians 1:19-20  …it was the Father’s good pleasure for all of His fullness to dwell in Christ, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

John 7:37-38  “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.  Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.”
