The Messiah Anticipated
O Come O Come Emmanuel and Ransom Captive Israel!
Anticipation For Messiah Was Profound
John 1:41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah”
John 1:45 We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote…
John 4:25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah is coming, and when He comes, He will explain everything to us.”
Human Expectations Of Messiah Were Earthly
Acts 1:6 When they met together, they asked Him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
Acts 1:7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His Own authority.
Human Expectations Of Messiah Are Countless
Matthew 16:13-14 He asked His disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
Messiah Is Individually And Supernaturally Revealed
Matthew 16:15-17 “But what about you?” He asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God!” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by My Father in heaven!
The Expectations Of The Messiah Did Not Match What He Himself Taught
Matthew 5:5, 9, 11-12 “Blessed are the gentle, they shall inherit the earth…Blessed are the peacemakers, they shall be called sons of God…Blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak all kinds of evil against you on My account. Rejoice and be glad for your reward will be great in heaven.”
The Evidence Of Scriptural Witness Proves Who Jesus Is
Matthew 11:2-6 When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples to ask Him, “Are you the One Who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of Me!”
Messiah’s Death Dashed Human Expectations
Luke 24:19-21 He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death and they crucified Him; but we had hoped that He was the One Who was going to redeem Israel…
1 Corinthians 1:23-24 …we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Messiah’s Identity Is Linked To His Resurrection
Luke 24:21-24 …it is the third day since all this took place and some of our women amazed us saying that they went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find His body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said He was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but Him they did not see…
Messiah Reveals Who He Is In Scripture
Luke 24:25-27 He said to them, “How foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter His glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.
No One Anticipated Messiah’s Suffering And Death
Isaiah 52:13-15 My servant will act wisely; He will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. Just as there were many who were appalled at Him– His appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness– so will He sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of Him. For what they were not told, they will see and what they have not heard, they will understand.
Real Anticipation For Messiah Is In Resurrection!
Isaiah 53:10-11 It was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,…
True Hope For Messiah Is To See Him On The Cross
Isaiah 53:11-12 …He will bear their iniquities. Therefore I will give Him a portion among the great and He will divide the spoils with the strong, because He poured out His life unto death and was numbered with the transgressors. For He bore the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors.
