The First Stone
John 8:1-11

Assembling To Hear The Lord Is Essential To Our Faith
John 8:1-2  But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.

Hebrews 10:25  …do not neglect meeting together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Acts 2:42  …they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayer…

Deuteronomy 31:12  …Assemble the people, men, women, and little ones, and the sojourner within your towns, that they may hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, and be careful to do all the words of this law,

Hebrews 12:22-23   …you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect,

Experts Interrupt Our Worship On Legal Technicalities
John 8:3  The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group…

To Enforce Part Of The Law Violates Whole Law
John 8:4-6  They said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger.

Deuteronomy 22:23-24 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death–the girl because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

Matthew 19:3  Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?”

Luke 10:25  … a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”

Matthew 22:18  But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, “Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?

Mark 12:15  Shall we pay or shall we not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why are you testing Me? Bring Me a denarius to look at.”

Remove The Speck From Your Eye First
John 8:6b-8  But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with His finger. When they kept on questioning Him, He straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.

Matthew 7:3-5  “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?  You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

We Must ALL Recognize Our Own Sin In Order To Help A Fellow Sinner
John 8:9  At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.

Restoration Is The New Standard In The New Covenant
John 8:10-11  Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Hebrews 8:11-13  …they shall not teach every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know Me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In that He saith, A New Covenant, He hath made the first old. Now that which decays and waxes old is ready to vanish away.

Hebrews 12:22-24
